Happy Mid-February, Framers! And happy love-celebration from myself and Richard Brautigan, whose poetry I’ve used to put you all in an endorphin-flooded brain state.* The images are mine, and they are potent reminders of the sweetness in my life (but, yes, I will have an overpriced truffle. Thank you so much). I invite you all to look for examples of couples of all kinds with strong connections – breathing, gentle, eternal, castle-building connections. It is a special kind of satisfying, and a reminder of the power of couples, duets, dyads. To slightly misquote an episode of Northern Exposure, one person can have a profound effect, but two people can change the world.

Find a second person. Do something together. Change the world.

I hate the term accompanist

I hate the term accompanist,” continues Burnside. “You can’t deny there are connotations that it’s a secondary entity. But unfortunately I can’t think of a better one. If you insist on being called a pianist then people think that you’re comparing yourself to Sviatoslav Richter. That’s not what it’s about: you’re just asking to be taken seriously in your own right.'”

Who are Roger Vignoles and Anna Tillbrook? I didn’t know either.  They are musical accompanists– unsung heroes.  Read the stories of famous accompanists in this article here.  

Tilbrook says there are times when she has saved singers from embarrassment. “The real art is to have that sixth sense, knowing when they are going to have a memory lapse, when they’re going to come in a bar early or even skip a whole verse. You have to be able to cover all that in your playing, so smoothly that no one notices.”

Frame Dance Rehearsal

Frame Dance Rehearsal

Yesterday in rehearsal, we celebrated Laura Gutierrez’s birthday. We all laughed as her fellow dancers carried her throughout the room to Donna Lewis’ “I love you, always forever.” After starting off on a fun and energetic note, they wasted no time getting into the movement. Lydia taught the dancers new movement before reviewing their work from previous rehearsals. They experimented with different music to give their movements a more distinctive feel.

One of the new sections they learned was inspired by Lydia’s visit to the Blanton Museum, where Frame Dance will be performing  September 18th.  The section involved using the space in an interactive walking  sequence, and is something I will look forward to seeing during the performance.

The dancers combined their previous work and new sections together weaving an intricate larger dance piece. The dancers took their cues from the different components of the music. The music for their next show is composed by Robert Honstein and named An Index of Possibility, which will be performed live at the Blanton Museum in Austin. Don’t forget to mark your calendars, because this is a performance you won’t want to miss!
